Happy Wonder Wednesday Everyone,

Angela Bowen here, the host of Looking Back On M

Today, I covered S1E4: The Workplace, which aired on October 13, 2021.

In this episode Dean heads to band practice with Bill, but the grown folks' business at the music studio prompts Lillian to pick Dean up; Dean learns what his mom does while he's at school all day.

After Dean becomes a distraction at Bill's recording session that is filled with pot smoking bandmates and sexual innuendos (a song called "Pop That Cherry")Dean asks is that another way to eat it a cherry? One of Bill's bandmates answers if you do it right. (possible oral sex joke). Bill sends Dean to visit Lillian at her workplace.

I really enjoyed seeing Lillian at her workplace as an accountant and seeing how even though she has a Master's Degree (no one else there does BTW) and basically runs that place, she is still not treated with respect by her co-workers, 99 % of who are white. She's expected to clean up their mistakes when they F-UP and whenever someone's birthday rolls around she and ONLY she is expected to make cupcakes.

She even has to eat lunch ALONE because apparently everyone is uncomfortable around her, heck even Coach Long who also works there snubs Dean's invitation to sit in the breakroom and have lunch with him and his mom.

I couldn't believe it.

It's 1968 and it's still very much a man's world as sexual harassment in the workplace for women is very high as we see Lillian give some tips to one of the two secretaries on how to handle their boss's demands of wearing more revealing attire to show off their legs.

One scene that really bothered me was when Dean was in the the breakroom of his Mom's workplace handing out the cupcakes she made he tells us the audience how white ladies just loved him and then we're treated to a montage of women in his school from a teacher, and a lunch lady commenting on Dean being so well mannered, the next one is what bothered me it's some housewife with her daughter in the background as she tells Dean "I'm so happy you won't rape my daughter".

WTF!!!

Was that really necessary to have that in there?

If families are watching this, how will parents explain why that scene is there to their kids?

Overall a good and informative episode.

Dean's innocence is still intact as he still believes condoms are balloons, which he finds when Lillian is making a care package for Bruce as she prays to God, she's not ready to be a Grandmother.

Join me next week when I cover S1E5: The Lock-In, which aired on October 20, 2021.

In this episode Dean is reluctant to attend the annual church lock-in until Kim tells him it's where she got her first kiss; then he enlists his friends to help him pair up with Keisa.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone (if you celebrate it)
