On Friday March 18th, 2016 the Western Mustangs looked to take the first step in their CIS title defence at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, Alberta. They would take on the 2016 AUS Champions in the Saint Mary's Huskies. With game tied 0-0 after 40 minutes, it took only 29 seconds of the 3rd to see Caitlyn Schell score the first and what turned out to be the only goal of the game. The 1-0 loss ended Western's hopes of becoming back to back National Champions, while the win propelled SMU to the semi-finals to take on the Montreal Carabins.
