Art pop emerged alongside Pop art and was influenced by the movement's integration of high and low culture, exploring ideas such as pop's status as commercial art, notions of artifice and the self, and questions of historical authenticity. Musicians and bands like Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground and Roxy Music echoed Pop Art's emphasis on simplicity, pioneering a modernist avant-garde approach to art-rock and pop that ignored the conventional hierarchies of artistic representation and explored the relationship between creativity and commercialism; simultaneously celebrating and critiquing popular and mass culture. This month’s mix explores the influence of Pop art on music.
