Techno pioneer Jeff Mills recently spoke to OpenLab’s Marcus Barnes to explain the history of his iconic label, Axis Records. Over the course of 30 years, Axis has been at the forefront of techno’s evolution, exploring a more minimal aesthetic in its early stages, and giving Jeff a space to express his often innovative and progressive creativity.

He takes us right back to the beginning, when he lived in New York while holding down a residency at legendary venue Limelight. In the Big Apple he divided his time between DJing and setting up the label, which was an instant success. That was in 1992. Over the three decades that have followed, Jeff’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is considered “techno” has seen the label go through several rebirths. In its current phase, Axis has become a platform where Jeff collaborates with a range of artists, while also utilising the label’s influential capabilities to offer a space to artists who want to express themselves freely. Spanning a variety of styles, from jazz to deep house and more expansive electronic compositions, Axis continues to offer a channel that is sometimes radical, and always pushing forwards with its ideology.
