In the first segment of our interview with John Allerding, DO we discussed the generalities of his work as a physician on the Antarctic Continent. It is not a job for the feint of heart. In this episode we continue with our interview and John will go deeper into the preparations that he makes to leave his home in Ohio and spend 6 months in the dark on the bottom of the world.
Here’s a little hint: John has found a way to return to General Practice medicine of 60 years ago. The scope of his practice is… …EVERYTHING. Seriously. Imaging, general surgery, pharmacology and dentistry. You have to be able to do it all. How do you prepare for this stuff given the diminishing scope of training and scope that seems to occur in family medicine residencies?
This episode challenges the future family physician to really examine the type of training that prospective post-doctoral programs will offer. We were considerate of the idea that the broad scope of the Family Physician is not just something to consider for Antarctica. It applies to situations like Hurricane Katrina as well. All in all this episode is really thought provoking.
John has a Facebook page and it has all of the normal stuff that you would think to find on a Facebook page (photos of life, grandkids and a healthy smattering of John’s obsession with Corvettes) and It has some of Johns incredibly beautiful photos of Antarctica. We encourage you to pull it up as you listen to this (assuming you are not driving).
NO JOKE, DISTRACTED DRIVING IS ILLEGAL AND INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS
