"Ask yourself whether you are happy and you cease to be so" – John Stuart Mill
"Why would God give us His commandments? Doesn't He want us to be happy?" "If He wants us to be happy, why is His covenant so constraining? Maybe His covenant isn't really that good...Maybe it's His way of enslaving us and keeping us from reaching our fullest potential and freedom!"
Throughout our journey through Romans thus far, Paul has been alluding to the stories in Genesis, specifically, the beginnings of humanity (for Jews, that would be Adam and Eve) and God's covenant with Abraham. There was nothing wrong with the Torah or God's covenants but because humanity questioned God's integrity and questioned whether God had their best interests, humanity ended up on the wrong side of the covenant i.e. ultimate death. It's like a fish not believing that the ocean has its best interest so it decides to go on dry land. What happens? Imminent death. Jonathan continues our journey through Romans with chapter 7. Enjoy!
