Do good and good will follow. Is it true? We’ve journeyed with Joseph and thus far, no matter how good of a worker he was, no matter how successful his employer was reaping the rewards from him, he was still paid nothing because he was a slave and now he’s a prisoner awaiting his trial. The guy is suffering even though he’s doing good. So, “Do good and good will follow.” Is that true? Does that happen?

I’m sure you may have some stories of doing good and good followed such as recognition or being rewarded for what you’ve done etc. But have you ever had moments when you do good and you receive nothing in return or worse, ridicule and suffering like Billy Batson in the scene that I just showed you? That regardless of all the good he did, he’s still an unwanted orphan, living in a youth hostel on his own, no family and no parents? Yet, he still remains faithful to doing good to others expecting good will come. Will it ever come? Or is it just a fleeting belief?

I had those moments as well. You get a lot of those moments especially if you volunteer as much as I have and trying to do my best in showing my faith through my work in the workplace. Serving on non-profit boards and strata councils and doing what’s right behind the scenes at work, it’s a thankless job and constantly you are needed to do “good.” But many times, I personally don’t see good coming my way in return. But then again, what is the “good,” am I expecting? Or am I, like Billy Batson, am defining “good” the wrong way and that in fact, good has come my way without me noticing it? That’s what we’ll be talking about today as we embark on chapters 40 and 41.
