Scientists use the word “anthropogenic” in referring to environmental change caused or influenced by people, either directly or indirectly. Human-initiated climate change, as opposed to naturally occurring climatic activities, is directly linked to the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation leading to melting of ice sheets and flooding and the release of aerosols into the air and our oceans leading to ocean acidification causing the death and subsequently extinction of several species.
