By long-standing tradition, we begin our 11:30pm service of Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve by singing the beautiful Austrian carol "Silent Night." It sets the tone of the service perfectly: the stillness of the dark night, and the sense of expectation, as we prepare for the wonder and the mystery of the birth of Christ two thousand years ago.
The service is sung by St Bride's Choir accompanied by the St Bride's Orchestra, to whom many thanks.
Our mass setting online will be one of Mozart's most popular works, his Coronation Mass K 317, completed in 1779 and the last of the masses he wrote in Salzburg. The performance was recorded in 2018 and St Bride's Choir is accompanied by the St Bride's Orchestra.
During the communion the choir some of their favourite Christmas pieces, including Eric Whitacre's popular setting of a text by American poet Edward Esch "Lux aurumque" and John Ireland's touching 1913 carol "The Holy Boy."
