The religious leaders stood before Christ in the temple. He has just challenged their authority, and now he is pronouncing judgment on them for their failures to take care of Israel. These men simply resolve to put Christ to death which fulfills Jesus own words.
A prophet of God brings truth and calls people to repent. King David repented when confronted by Nathan. But these men refuse to repent, but rather they reject Christ. But Christ is the stone they rejected, the stone that becomes the cornerstone.
