Description

In the newest episode of the One for You Podcast I am joined by Astrit Abazi to discuss the new release NOTRE-DAME DU NIL and the gem HIGH AND LOW.

NOTRE-DAME DU NIL tells the story of the eponymous boarding school in Ruanda in 1973, as the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi begins to escalate. The young girls in the school must contend not only with the usual struggles of teenage years, but also with the dripping poison of the ethnic conflict. We discuss postcolonial nationalism, saturated images and the poetic structure of the film.

Akira Kurosawa is one of Japan's most highly regarded directors. In HIGH AND LOW he tells the story of a kidnapping gone wrong and the tensions within Japanese society it reveals. Astrit and I had wildly different views on this film. Masterpiece or snooze fest? Listen to find out.
