Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has announced his retirement, kicking off a fierce political battle over the future of the court. Kennedy is 81 and has served on the court for almost three decades, acting as a crucial swing vote and proving to be a moderate justice who supported both gay marriage and gun rights.
