French drum & bass producer The Clamps has become more and more of an identifiable force, with his forthcoming EP on veteran Prolix’s Trendkill Records quickening his pace to the top echelons. The Clamps production has often been an enviable trait, something which the artist has been refining over the past few years; this hasn’t gone unnoticed by the heaviest hitters within drum & bass, which is why he came under the radar of Prolix. And The Clamps fits well within Prolix’s growing arsenal of producers, something which the head honcho has also spent years refining. When it comes to the genre’s darker sounds, Trendkill is a go-to imprint, dominating both charts and DJ sets during its expansion. With a host of main-stay labels already ticked off by Prolix himself, it made sense for him to build a musical hub which highlighted the sounds influencing his own output.
Since the late 90s, The Clamps has spent his time pouring over the intricacies of everything from hard techno to drum & bass. After initially making a name for himself on homegrown label Kosen Production, he’s become more and more of a pivotal figure throughout the wider music circuit. Now having released on imprints such as Invisible, Titan, Eatbrain and Impact Music, his forthcoming ‘I Feel’ EP is a return to form, following the explosion of his ‘The Odyssey’ LP in 2018.
First track ‘No Reality’ creates an intro which is instantly encapsulating with its steppy instrumentals and patches of waif-like samples. Once it drops, through its pounding drum stabs, you’re taken directly into the belly of the best. Title-track ‘I Feel’ is just as chaotic, tearing through with robotic vocal interludes. ‘Mind Exploration’ runs through next, with an old-school reminiscing as you’re yet again released against its manic mechanics. ‘Interaction’ is the final track, foreboding as it begins to wheel you towards its first climatic breakdown. Each punching horn takes you in deeper before its sci-fi atmospherics leave you to its driving ferociousness.
Trendkill Records are back, with help from The Clamps - proving that the next year is titled to be one of their biggest yet.
