John 4:5-6 So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph; and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
It was noon, and Jesus was tired. The well apparently was located outside the city of Sychar and more than likely beside the road upon which Jesus was traveling. It was like a Buc-ee’s here in Texas or a rest area on the interstate—well, not exactly, but it was a place to rest and get refreshment.
Our encouragement today comes from what we learn about Jesus from John’s account. He was wearied from His journey. When we are doing God’s will, it doesn’t mean that it will necessarily be easy. We should not be discouraged if we have to make long, tiring trips, work hard, and need to pause for some R and R. It’s okay and expected that we would experience weariness because we are in bodies of flesh.
Because we are living to love with Jesus, we, like Jesus, also know we are on our way to love someone God wants to love through us. Jesus was waiting because He knew someone would eventually come and be able to give Him some water to drink. As He waited, He probably was receiving ideas about how He was going to introduce Himself and direct the conversation to a relationship with His Father. Be on the alert to the Spirit of God as you go places. Consider the setting, the possibilities of interactions with people, and ask the Holy Spirit to prepare you for them.
Sometimes we may use the term “divine appointment” to describe an encounter with someone. When we live with Jesus’ worldview, namely, there’s only one God from whom are all things, and He is love, we view every encounter with someone as a divine appointment. Jesus knew any encounter He had with someone was a divine appointment. The Father arranged it, and Jesus expected His Father would reveal Himself through Him. We may have that same confidence as we go through each day. So, let’s be ready for the appointments God has prepared for us today.
