John 17:5 “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”
Before the world was, God, the Father and Jesus, the Son existed in glory together. They were united as one. They shared the glory of heaven before they made the earth and everything in it. Their united glory then was their goal in all creation, but especially mankind. As the Westminster Confession begins, “What is the chief end of man? To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” Jesus came to fulfill that chief end of man, which we could not do, sinners that we are. Having accomplished that work in the world, which existed in heaven before it was created, He now prays for the glory of God that predated the world, brought it into existence, and sent Him into it in human form. God and man united as one in glorious love. If Jesus lives in us, that is our future state and hope, for if we are united with Him, we will be united with Him in the glory that the Father and Son enjoyed before the world was. “Christ in you is the hope of glory,” wrote Paul in Col. 1:27. I can’t wait! How about you? We will see that we predated the world in Christ!
