John 11:4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."
This verse deserves more meditation. Yesterday, I commented that God’s purpose for all things in the lives of those He loves is to glorify Jesus in them. This is a distinctively Christian foundational truth to be applied often, everyday of our lives. This means we know God is working all things together for good—His glory (Rom. 8:28) — and that every situation is an opportunity for the faith of Jesus to be revealed in us as we trust Him. The temptation to manipulate people and circumstances to get what we want or think is best faces all of us just like it did Mary and Martha. Contrary to natural fallen thinking, our best is not our comfort and happiness in this world. It’s seeing God make much of Jesus in our situations and suffering. This changes everything. Let God be magnified (Psalm 70:4)!
