John 4:25-26 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
How do you think the woman at the well understood what Jesus said about God? This verse reveals that she didn’t understand it at all. She again changed the subject, but at least hovered around the salvation issue. She at least knew that God was going to send the Messiah, and that when He came, He would declare all things. I’m not sure what the woman understood what “all things” the Messiah would declare, but Jesus had already declared some amazing things. He had declared that He could give her living water that springs up to eternal life. He had declared that He knew about her life—remember, He knew of her 5 husbands and that she was living with a guy. He had explained the characteristics of true worship and that God is spirit.
We find in this verse the greatest declaration of everything He had said to the woman. “I who speak to you am He.” He is the Christ, the Messiah, the One for whom she, her people, and all of Israel were waiting. Here is today’s encouragement for us. The good news for her is also good news for us if we too are in need of salvation, which of course, we are! Everyone needs a savior. Everyone needs eternal life. Everyone needs a never-ending spring of living water gushing forth from within. God had placed this woman in the path of the Christ, whom she so badly needed. If we have become believers and disciples of Christ, then we know what amazing, overwhelming joy, and gratitude this woman experienced. These verses remind us of our first love for Christ that arose when we realized who Jesus was and what He has done for us. It confirms our faith in Him, and should assure us that we have not trusted in Jesus in vain. We believe Jesus is who He said He is. He is the Christ, our savior, and source of living water that springs up to eternal life.
I hope you’ll pause, remember your first love for Jesus, and if you’ve drifted away from it or have taken it for granted, return to your first love for Jesus. Be amazed at who He is and that you have His life in you. Worship God in spirit and truth. Drink deeply and satisfyingly from His presence so that you can live to love for His glory today.
