Romans 2:9-11 There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.
If we take these verses out of their context, one might argue that Paul taught that salvation is based upon good works. However, he had already made it clear in 1:16-17 that salvation is based on the righteousness of Christ that is given to all those who believe, whether Jews or Greeks. The point in these verses is that there is no partiality with God. He doesn’t grant favor to the Jews because He chose them to be the race through whom He would give the world both His Law and a savior. He judges what is evil and what is good, regardless of one’s individual distinction in this world.
Today we can draw encouragement that there is a wonderful reward from God to every soul of man who does good. Deeds which flow out of the life of Jesus are the only ones which bring glory to God. Those who live that way will experience glory, honor, and peace in their souls—both now and forever. If you don’t have Jesus, you cannot produce good deeds, and therefore there will be tribulation and distress of soul—both now and forever. Knowing these things, let us live to love with Jesus for the glory of God.
