Description

John 3:19 This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
Light reveals what exists. That’s how God judges. When we walk into a dark room and turn on the light, the state of the room is revealed. The presence of light doesn’t change what exists in the room. The light reveals what is in and out of place. The point is that light reveals things as they truly are.
We learn from this verse that God sent the Light into this world. He turned the light on in the world, so to speak. What is the state of mankind in the world? Their evil deeds reveal that they love darkness rather than the Light. This is God’s judgment that Jesus spoke of in the previous verse when He said, “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already.”
In John 1:4-5, John wrote, “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” So the state of mankind, bound in the darkness of sin, has been revealed. Without God doing a miraculous work of mercy and grace, every man is judged and condemned.
Today, take a moment and consider how you respond when God turns the light on your evil deeds. When He reveals that you are unbelieving, fearful, selfish, impatient, lustful, impure, idolatrous, mean, hurtful, and untrusting, do you run to the Light or do you try to hide and excuse yourself? Your response is the judgment. There will be times when God reveals that you aren’t abiding in Christ (which means the Spirit has turned on the light). Humble yourself, quickly look to Jesus again, and thank Him for judging your sin in His Son on the cross. Then turn to Him, declaring that He is your life. Ask Him to love through you for His glory, and His Light will shine through you.
