This multi-part album is an homage to the musical form of a Nocturne. A musical form dating back to the late Romantic and Impressionist musical eras, these expressive and lyrical pieces are evocative of the tranquility of the night. An eclectic musical voyage, Neural Nocturnes imagines a world of musical noir through its multifarious sonic paintings and idiosyncratic textures.
Preluding with the synthetic tapestry of “Polyphonic Paragraph”, this tone poem envelops a sense of calm and discovery as it continues to add layers of sound. Progressing into rhythmic arpeggios of percussive devices, this track breaks the ice with a poignant musical statement.
Ushering in a similar sense of textural form, “Systemic Instability” arrives with at a significantly slower pace, invoking the low-slung hip-hop and acid styles of J Dilla, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier.
Taking an entirely different direction to rhythm and meter, “Cross Examination” incorporates layers of percussive polyphony with an indie rock feel. This song’s swaying leads and bells to establish a significantly distinct color palette and emotional variety.
Departing from previous compositional approaches, “Languid Lullaby” employs a contrasting of disjointed synths and patterns of syncopation. Employing a glitch-style of sound design, a somber string section emerges in the distance as a classic Oberheim brass sound connects these dueling rhythmic components.
