Change Request | Neural Nocturnes: Winter Vibes
This multi-part album is an homage to the musical form of a Nocturne. A musical form dating back to the late Romantic and Impressionist musical eras, these expressive and lyrical pieces are evocative of the tranquility of the night. An eclectic musical voyage, Neural Nocturnes imagines a world of musical noir through its multifarious sonic paintings and idiosyncratic textures.
Taking drum programming queues from the production work of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, “Organized Disservice” incorporates a freestyle feel of 80s breakbeats with the bass programming of a nu-disco record.
Intersecting melodies and synthetic bells, this late-night number leads the way into the Larry Heard inspired “Callous Consideration”. Right out of a movie soundtrack, an ominous feeling of uncertainty and disillusion introduces this song. Building into a broken beat rhythmic pattern, the Juno-106 bassline takes over motioning the insensitive groove into a place of redemption.
Slowing down the tempo, “Lavish Lustfulness” signals a distinct change in mood with its calming ostinato. Repetitive orchestral bells watch over static organ chords, suspending glitchy percussion illustrations to form a lush musical palette.
Bringing about some emotional closure, “Symptom Seven” concludes as the last track on the record. Stretched out vocal arias sit atop sustained harmonies in this languid sonic painting. The swelling of this swarming motion is contrasted by an intersection of backspun percussion and sporadic transients. This last song provides some spiritual closure to this album, as it disintegrates into an angelic swell of sonority.
