RYEBREAD | DIBS IS OVER (Change Request WNUA Steppers Delight)

Dibs - The practice of holding a shoveled-out parking space after a heavy snowfall by putting chairs, laundry baskets, or other items in the street to mark the claimed space. This is a time honored tradition in The City of Chicago for over a century. A practice supported and endorsed by many politicians and a majority of residents alike, the practice is not without its dissenters.

Love it or hate it, it's a Chicago tradition.

The Chicago MC—RYEBREAD—comes correct with his take on the practice, the vernacular and implications for the assertion of it. His original mix is a low slung hip-hop soundscape, featuring his internal dialogue as the narrator to the enduring dibs saga. RYEBREAD proclaims a contentious view—shared by many—with his seminal track “DIBS IS OVER”.

Having loved this track from the first time I heard it—mainly, for the controversial nature—I knew that I needed to do a mix of it to shed a different conceptual musical light on this indigenous tradition. For this Change Request mix, I took to creating a homage to the late, great WNUA radio station. An FM station that saw the likes of Ramsey Lewis—among others—find a home for contemporary jazz musicians from 1987 to 2009. No longer active, this station steadily broadcasted dusties, steppers, and modern smooth jazz for the sophisticated—Grown Folks—crowd for over two decades.
