The word meditation in Tibetan language means no to focus. It is not concentration, focus, samaadhi, tranquility, peace or bliss. The word in Tibetan is to familiarize yourself. Meditation is to become familiar with who you are. So that you can come off the conditioning done by society, religion, peers, family and friends so you go past the labels that I am a man or a woman, a hindu or a muslim or an Indian or an American. It is to know yourself beyond all these labels that who you really are. In essence, that is what meditation is about.
There are hurdles and afflictions in meditation. Afflictions are what stop you from progressing in life. Yogic scriptures list five types of afflictions that can be categorized into three types, intellectual, emotional and instinctive. The five types of afflictions in Sanskrit are Avidya, Asmita, Raga, Dvesha, Abhinivesha. Ignorance and lack of wisdom is the first affliction in the intellectual affliction. Ignorance has been put at the root of all sufferings. All sufferings we experience in life arise from ignorance.
