The questions is how to get out of the need to keep pleasing others to feel good about yourself? There is a couplet from Kabir that it is not that difficult to let go of the wealth but it is very hard to let go of the respect. When someone speaks good words to us, we feel respected and feel that the other person understands us. There is good in everyone but if someone sees that good in you and says that oh this is a good person. You will feel good about it.
But, if you are keeping the other person happy only because they will speak good things about you then you have to remember one simple thing. That is when a person speaks, he has a lens on his eye and he only sees what is in front of him. He is not talking about you or for you. He is only expressing his view based on how he understands you.
