The fourth pillar of dhyana is vigilance. Mindfulness will only work if you are vigilant while you are meditating. If you are vigilant you will not forget. If you don’t forget you will keep the clarity. If you are mindful, do not forget and keep the lucidity, you will automatically be able to maintain the concentration. When you are able to mediate with concentration for a longer period of time, you will open up as a flower. How long a person can stay vigilant? Every individual has a limit. When you sit for five to seven minutes, you can sit with vigilance but soon after that laziness starts coming in.
There are two main hurdles in meditation. The first one is restlessness. You start your meditation but soon the mind becomes so restless that it becomes difficult to meditate. The mind then starts wandering and you feel that maybe I should not meditate now and do it tomorrow. The mind starts giving you excuse that why should I meditate and so on. When you feel restless while meditating, stop meditating at that time. Take deep breaths and calm yourself. You can get up or stay there and once the mind is calm, continue with your meditating. What you need is to have short sessions of quality meditation.
