Description

The question is that is it necessary/mandatory to be vegetarian and non-alcoholic to succeed in meditation and the spiritual path? It is not true that saints in Bengal, Kashmir or Kerala did not succeed in meditation or attain spirituality. The saints in Tibet ate meat and fish. It is not that by eating meat you will fall back on the path of spirituality but it is not a compassionate act. When you are eating meat, it involves a killing of someone. Something has been slaughtered brutally for you to put that meat in your mouth.

When you advance on the spiritual path, most likely you will not be able to eat meat. When the animal is slaughtered, there is lot of blood. You don’t know how it was cleaned or even if it was cleaned properly. You are eating it only to enjoy its taste. If you lived in extreme cold places where it is hard to grow any vegetables then maybe to survive you would need to eat meat. But now, most people live in warm places where there is enough vegetation.
