We're so far into the future that human beings seldom leave their honeycomb like cells because The Machine meets all of their needs. The central character, an older woman who has, like most human beings, morphed into a lump of flesh capable, mostly, of pushing buttons to summon the things she wants. She is comfortable with the future, until her son decides to visit the surface of the earth, which no one does anymore.
