Sharma's leadership of Standard & Poors acquiesced to the decision to downgrade the credit rating of the United States of America on August 5, 2011 — for the first time in history. Subsequently, financial markets around the globe saw dramatic losses of both corporate and personal wealth solely tied to market performance.
