- Righteousness is doing what is right in the sight of God. This is a simple definition that is far more complex under the surface. To be righteous is to do everything that God calls us to do.
- The Old Testament says that God is righteous. In Psalm 7:11a we read “God is a righteous judge.” The word righteous in the Hebrew is “tsaddiy” which means just, lawful, and correct. The word righteous in the New Testament comes from the Greek word “dikaios” which means observing divine laws or upright, faultless, innocent, and guiltless.
How do I pursue righteousness?
- So we’ve covered what righteousness is,
- Let’s finish with how we pursue it.
1. Pursuit of Gods Character
- In 2 Timothy 2:22, Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
- when Paul talks about turning from our lustful desires and pursuing righteousness, he doesn’t mean trying to earn or achieve it. He means pursuing God’s character, because it is the desire of our new nature become more Christlike.
2. Be born again: Christ is the bridge
3. Our relationship with God should be our first priority
- How does worldliness turn our loyalty and service away from God? What are some ways we might be tempted to seek the things of the world before the things of God? (Answers may include waiting to pay tithing until after we buy the things we need or want or deciding not to serve a mission because of a desire for worldly things.)
