Description

Netflix’s new limited series Unorthodox follows Esty, a young woman growing up in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn, as she seeks to escape the restrictive life of her community for a new life in Berlin. But her husband and members of the community want her back home, and follow Esty into her new life, seeking to convince her to return. In this in-depth conversation about the sound design and mix of the show, the sound team discusses getting the authenticity of the ultra-Orthodox community right and how sound helped flashbacks slowly reveal the details of Esty’s story. We also discuss how director Maria Schrader created great sound moments at the script stage, and preserved and created room for those moments as she edited and filmed the show.
