Description

Sunset Grooves love thds and love Tropical Twista Records. Put both of them together and you get Istanbul on their new EP "Two Sides of a World".

This EP is inspired by people.

On the track "Mamyda", I recorded my Portuguese grandmother having a hard time talking about her life under Salazar’s dictatorship. I had been hearing plenty of those stories for all my life and I wanted to express them, while honoring and keeping track of my beloved 92 year old grandma’s life and voice. This process was inspired by the track «Walonreye» [Akumandra 2018], for which I recorded my Belgian grandmother talking about survival during World War II. "Istanbul" was composed after playing at Klein Garten, Istanbul. The promoters generously offered a reflective 3 day - tour of the city with meaningful discussions about the country’s history, multicultural heritage and contemporary political issues (and Turkish music, of course). Furthermore, they kindly helped me buy a good "Zurna", which is a traditional Turkish wind instrument I’d always been fascinated about, that I decided to use on this song honoring both Turkey and its diversity, as well as the nice people I’ve met there.
