Ep.39 Afghanistan – One year of Taliban rule (یک سال حکومت طالبان - گفتگو با الیورمارسدن)
It has been one year since the fall of Afghanistan and Afghans are still suffering. One US soldier puts it this way when he talks about the mission to 'liberate' Afghanistan: "At night, when I am alone, and the demons come, I can hear these wails. They haunt me. When I am awakened by their wails, I often remember the looks of disgust on the women's faces. And I am ashamed." The American withdrawal was a disaster for Afghanistan, the wider region and probably also for America's national security.
There has been a steady brain drain, an exodus of Afghan professionals since Taliban takeover, leaving Afghanistan to start over from scratch. Losing such human capital has been disastrous for the country.
In this episode I talk with Oliver Marsden, a journalist currently based in Beirut Lebanon who has reported extensively from Afghanistan since Taliban takeover a year ago. We cover a lot of ground, from the looming humanitarian disaster to ISIS of Khorasan and the recent Taliban one year anniversary celebrations. I asked Oliver about a broad range of topics: Girls being unable to go to school, women's rights, economic and political crisis and future prospects.
