In this episode I speak with Prof. Chiel van den Akker about a variety of topics related to history and its value. We discuss the difference between history and philosophy of history, what is history and why its usefulness are mutually dependent, birth of history-writing, history as science, the role of narrative, if there is such a thing as 'Truth' and what is its relationship with facts. In addition, we also talk about the 3 giants of philosophy and their views about history and historiography: Hegel, Marx and Nietzsche. Finally, we discuss history in the context of the history of Afghanistan.
Professor Chiel van den Akker is Lecturer in Historical Theory at the Department of Art and Culture, History and Antiquities. He is the author of The Modern Idea of History and its Value. An Introduction (2020) and The Exemplifying Past. A Philosophy of History (2018).
He received his Ph.D in Philosophy from Radboud University Nijmegen in 2009. There he also graduated cum laude in History.
He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Philosophy of History (JPH).
