The ACLU of PA and several of our allies are in the midst of a debate over probation reform at the state legislature. With bills pending in both the state House and the state Senate, there is an opportunity this year to change probation to a system that allows people to get on with their lives without the endless threat of going back to jail.
Derrell Key of Pittsburgh has lived it. Convicted of crimes that occurred more than a decade ago, Derrell has been out of prison since 2013. And he will be on probation until 2027. In this conversation, Derrell explains what life is like on probation, how the system can change for the better, and why he helps people who are coming home from prison.
