Today’s pod delves into the troubled past of Bosnia & Herzegovina through the eyes of one of her sons. Amer was a young man when the former Yugoslavia disintegrated into civil war in the 1990s and ended up joining the army to defend his country in the face of genocide and destruction. We learn what it is like to be an ordinary citizen thrown to the coalface of war, staring down death every day and learning to treasure and value the simple things for survival. We also discuss the rise of global jihadism and how the secularist, more tolerant and modern interpretation of Islam as practiced in Bosnia, may be a role model for the future. Following the conflict, he began a career in graphic design, art and advertising and has worked at the forefront of the Bosnian creative industry for the past two decades, where he has produced some of the country’s most hard-hitting and controversial artworks, including the 2016 campaign to re-launch the History Museum of Bosnia.
