Born the youngest of eight children into a separated working class north of England family, Julia Ross used her talent, street-smarts, hard work ethic and dedication to pull herself up by the bootstraps and make an extraordinary go of her life. Early successes as one of the only senior women in the notoriously chauvinistic UK building industry of the 1970s, paved a path that eventually led to her launching Julia Ross Recruitment in Australia, where, over a dozen years, she took it from a standing start to stock market floatation. Now retired from the recruitment scene, she continues to be a champion of women and women’s issues, especially as they apply to the workplace. We discuss how inherent ‘preconditioning’ continues to contribute to the state of the “glass ceiling”; the urgent need for a new, world-encompassing ‘ism’; and she also shares her advice and tips on how today’s women can succeed better in both business and life.
