Description

A re-dedication ceremony was held at the Crested Butte Cemetary for the 61 miners who died in a violent explosion in the Jokerville mine on January 24, 1884. They were buried in a mass grave within days.

Not much was known about these people and few had families. The families of the deceased left town.

Listen to the ceremony and learn about the disaster and the early days of coal mining in Crested Butte from the event's presenters Jim "Deli" Schmidt, Kay Flint, Bill Crank, and Dr. Duane Vandenbusche.
