October in Australia is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women, with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed by the age of 85.
Over the years, thanks to Australia's national breast cancer screening program, public health campaigns and more effective treatments being offered there has been significant improvements in early diagnosis and breast cancer survival rates.
However, despite these positive factors every day we still have 42 Australian women being diagnosed and 7 women will lose their life to breast cancer.
So why do women get breast cancer?

Today on Meditalk we speak with Professor Christobel Saunders who is recognised as one of Australia's most prominent research orientated cancer surgeons consulting at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco.
In 2017, Professor Saunders won the Premier's Science Award for Scientist of the Year which recognised her outstanding achievements in breast cancer research which continue to greatly help the lives of people affected by cancer.
In this interview Professor Saunders answers many questions about breast cancer to assist us to become better informed and breast cancer aware.
