Narrator: In addition to selecting some of his own early, figurative works to include in this presentation, Cai Guo-Qiang also embarked on a new series of paintings, which cite iconic works that may be recognized as forming part of the Guggenheim collection’s “brand.” Using his signature medium— gunpowder—Cai attempts to remake, or rather reimagine, masterpieces from the museum’s holdings. “While I ventured to include a few awkward works from my youth, my gunpowder works on glass and mirror appear as specters of a few modernist masterpieces,” the artist noted. “It is perhaps a witticism of my own trademark style, the artists, and the art ecosystem, for the amusement of the audience.”
