This courtyard has become one of the most popular spaces on the University of Michigan campus. Composed of a series of “waves” made of earth, the Environmental Sculpture reflects the wavelengths studied at the adjacent Aerospace Engineering building located on North Campus. To maintain this living sculpture, special soil and grass mixtures were developed, and a special irrigation system and maintenance plan were designed to ensure its longevity. The art was designed by landscape architect Maya Lin with SmithGroup JJR.
