This lecture discusses the Stoic philosopher Epictetus' work, the Discourses, and focuses on his famous "dichotomy of control", i.e. the distinction between what is in, and what is not in our power or control, and what is. In this discussion, taken from one of my classroom lectures, we discuss examples of which things he considers to be in our control, which he thinks are not, and why. We also discuss how getting this distinction wrong impacts a person.
