A new week means a new storming techno release from the irrepressible !Organism crew out of Switzerland. For their next trick they enlist the dual talents of Funkbrainer & Extra Dry for two new cuts, then ask Spiros Kaloumenos to remix, and the results are compelling.
Funkbrainer is a hugely prolific producer with more than 180 releases to his name. He layers up melancholic grooves with distorted melodies and does so on labels like Galore Music and Momentum League. He gets props from the likes of Chris Liebing and Paco Osuna and here teams up with !Organism associate and prolific Frenchman Extra Dry.
The title track ‘Papermind’ is a dark, deep and loopy roller with paranoid synths snaking about above forceful drums. It grows in intensity when a gurgling bassline comes into the mix and some distant voices add a spiritual edge.
The remix from Greek star Spiros Kaloumenos (a long time techno producer with many credits to his name and a regular on this label) is a more boisterous affair where the drums rattle about like galloping horses. Frazzled synths add an air of post apocalyptic tension to proceedings and the result is a truly standout track.
Funkbrainer & Extra Dry then hook up for ‘Transplant,’a much more dubbed out and spooky, late night cut with lots of eerie open space and fulsome echo chambers. Kicking drums then come in and the off kilter groove that emerges really sucks you in.
On this evidence, Funkbrainer & Extra Dry and !Organism is a techno match made in heaven.
