Written and directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked is the musical fantasy film which is the first of a two-part film adaption of the stage musical Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which is loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire and explores the origins of some of the characters from The Wizard of Oz prior to the events of that story and the film from 1939.
Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda (Ariana Grande), a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.
