The Jews of Paul’s day were pretty confident in their status as God’s chosen people—but a holy and just God judges lawbreakers regardless of religious privilege or piety. Paul’s indictment in Romans 2:17-29 applies to anyone who relies on external forms of religiosity rather than internal faith in Jesus Christ for salvation.
