Little NZ Birds is an NZ take on the classic traditional circle song 'Little Bird' featuring 5 small NZ manu (birds) - Toutouwai (NZ Robin), Miromiro (Tomtit), Kakaruia (Black Robin), Pōpokatea (Whitehead) and Mōhua (Yellowhead).
In New Zealand, as an island far from the world's continents, we have an astounding variety of birdlife, but they are threatened by predators, habitat loss and climate change so conservation organisations that work to protect them need our support.
This song was inspired by the Bird of the Year competition that Forest and Bird runs annually to raise awareness and support for our native bird life.
There are lots of ways families can help protect native birdlife, wherever we are in the world - by keeping our cats in at night time, by setting traps and helping support forest regeneration projects. Also by planting trees ourselves where possible.
It's important in places where native birds are starting to return to inhabited areas to plant bird friendly plants in our gardens, and water especially in dry areas, but not to feed the birds - they are better off finding their own safe food sources.
