Drop Off reads like a horror/action movie. It reminded me of Deep Rising, Deep Blue Sea and Aliens. Though the details about submarines, weapons and ships are rich and complex, lending an air of authenticity, the plot is straightforward and visceral. While investigating a mysterious die-off of marine life in the Atlantic, ex-soldier Steven Hunte and an odd assortment of sailors, eco tourists and marine biologists stumble across a new, mutated species of sea spider. At first, they try to bring one of the creatures aboard their floating base to study, but then everything quickly goes to hell. With a massive storm rolling in, swarms of the creatures begin to attack. From that point forward, it's a non-stop fight for survival.
I found Drop Off entertaining and engaging, with plenty of mayhem and monsters to go around. There are a few places where the characters info-dump facts about the ocean that the other characters would probably already know, and a moment or two in which the motives and the sheer quantities of the attacking sea spiders strained my credulity--but no more than is typically the case in a fun, action-oriented, horror/thriller film.
Overall, lots of fun for what it is--a blood-soaked battle at sea with lots of gore and a high body-count. And, I liked that the mystery of the origin of the monsters is addressed rather than left an open question. I always find that more satisfying than when stuff goes unexplained.
