Description

John Chase, newly married and just back from his honeymoon, doesn't have a moment to settle into life with his new bride before being called back to duty. Warlords are seizing control of a Central African nation and what had begun as a limited conflict is quickly ramping up to full-scale genocide. On orders of the president, he leads a Delta Force team to join up with a squad from the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, who are already on the ground. Together, they have one mission: Stop the wholesale slaughter of innocents by any means necessary. But things are not as they seem.
For those listeners who are familiar with the V Plague series, this is the story of John and Lucas Martin that was referenced in the novel Recovery: V Plague, Book 8. This story is set before the time of the V Plague and can be enjoyed before, during, or after without spoiling any events in the series.

I finally read the "Hunter's Rain" prequel waiting for Dirk Patton's book 16 of the Plague series. I am glad I finally did read it. In it the author shines a light on what, I hope, has been U.S. military policy to lessen the horrors of genocide in Africa, as this was the mission given John's 4 man team. Hunter's Rain introduces many of the realistic members of John Chase's teams in the Plague series, Nitro, Lucas, Two-step, wife Katie... and others, but not Rachael and Dog. The book ends with Nitro, I think it was, telling John after the mission, "You look like hell. You need a dog".

This prompted me to re-read Book 1 of the Plague series. Book 1 introduces John's life after the military when the virus hit; and book 1 introduces unforgettable Rachael and Dog. I got much more out of the re-read of book 1 because of the things Dirk mentioned in "Rain". It seems that Dirk has a sharp skill I don't see in but a handful of authors I read. All authors develop skills, but most others I have read don't quite seem to have the same clue Dirk does. Dirk's books are powerful and emotionally moving; the people in the books become "family"... including Dog. And I do admit, it hurt when Katie, Rachael, Dog, and John died. Patton's books are always great reads that immerse, entertain, and teach. Hard to put down.

What made John Chase the man we know and cheer for in Dirk Patton's 'V Plague' series? This short novella provides a glimpse at the newly married Army soldier.

After hearing rumors in the 'V Plague' series of John's time in Africa, I was whole-heartedly ready to find out. This story is dark, a tragic and sobering look into the horrors that he and his team faced there. The characters' humor thankfully shines through in the lighter moments, but the action and events that the men must witness is saddening.

This is also the story that might give a clue to the beginnings of the entire V Plague that threatens to wipe out humanity in the series. Vivid descriptions and a flowing storyline make this an easy one-night read. I'm looking forward to the thirteenth book in the 'V Plague' series, titled 'Exodus'. Now I just have to wait until January, 2017. Outstanding well done!
