In Episode 15, we debunk misinformation about the alleged link between popular contraceptive Depo-Provera and HIV.
Depo-Provera prevents pregnancy by releasing the synthetic hormone progestogen into the bloodstream.
If used correctly, the contraceptive injection is more than 99% effective.
A major study published in 2019 found that women using the Depo-Provera contraceptive had a risk of HIV infection no higher than 30%, compared to other contraceptives.
According to the WHO, due to this study, the contraceptive can currently be used without restrictions, even though some activists still disagree.
