Today's gospel is the part of the Sermon on the Mount known as the Beatitudes ("Blessed are the poor in spirit..."). Pastor Michelle points out that the beatitudes, if written by today's society, would count us blessed if we were wealthy, successful, and popular. Jesus beatitudes are counterintuitive to the world view, but those who are humble, peaceful, and merciful are blessed in the eyes of God.
