Bibi Netanyahu is back. He is back for the sixth time as Prime Minister in Israel. But this time he has coalition partners who not only belong to the extreme far right but some are also convicts. The ultranationalist minister of national security Ben-Gvir made a provocative visit to a Jerusalem holy site stirring tensions with Muslims and Arabs. His prior conviction relates to racism. Mr. Netanyahu himself still faces corruption charges. The policies and actions of the new government will impact four areas: the future of liberal democracy in the country; the future of the independent judiciary, relations with the Palestinian and Muslims, and the relationship with the White House. President Biden has asserted the US will continue to support the two state solution.
Dr. Atef Abdel Gawad discussed these areas of impact and tensions with a group of distinguished guests and experts: From Washington, Mr. Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the Deputy Executive Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Journalist Said Arikat who is a long time Washington based Palestinian journalist and analyst, and from Michigan Professor Brad R. Roth, who is a Professor of Political Science and Law at Wayne State University in Detroit.
